Associate Professor of Mathematics
“The things you are passionate about are not random, they are your calling,” – Fabienne Frederickson
Twenty-five years ago, Dr. Judith Quander found her passion and made it her calling. She became an educator, but not only an educator—an educator to future educators.
”You know It’s your passion because everything else in the world could be happening but when I’m teaching, I’m the most centered, focused, aware in that moment,” Quander said. “I feel so lucky to have a job that let’s me do that.”
At UHD, Quander is an Associate Professor of Mathematics and Assistant Department Chair for the Department of Mathematics and Statistics in the College of Sciences and Technology.
Growing up in Missouri City, Quander returned home to Houston in 2010 and joined UHD to help students prepare for careers in K-12 math education.
“I love working with people who are going to be teachers. It’s a very cool niche to be able to work with students who are going to go on and impact so many other students,” she said.
Quander earned her Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Bachelor of Arts, Plan II from the University of Texas at Austin, her Master of Science in Mathematics from the University of Arizona and Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics Education from the University of Georgia.
Her research focuses on preparing teachers and supporting them in their induction years as well as recruitment of STEM majors into the field of teaching. In addition to research, she is part of the leadership team for the UHD SynergIE program, which works to develop inclusive excellence in STEM.
“Part of the reason I came to UHD is the diversity of the student population, “Quander said. “I love the students. They are great.”
There’s a lot Quander likes about UHD, especially it’s size. She likes that it is a smaller university because it gives her the chance to engage in all aspects of the institution, unlike larger universities where she would only be able to engage in her department or college.
In 2021, Quander was asked to chair the Provost’s Search Committee to lead the search for UHD’s next Provost and she’s found it to be “a great learning experience.” She said she enjoys committee work because it affords her the opportunity to work with faculty from other colleges at UHD and connect with more people.
Outside of work, she participates in a program with the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators that helps prepare junior faculty for the tenure process. This year she became chair of the program’s committee.
“I really do like working with teachers. I would love to spend more time in schools observing students. It keeps me connected to K-12.”
Additionally, Quander volunteers for the PTA at her twins’ school and is involved in Moms Demand Action, an organization fighting for public safety measures to protect people from gun violence. She became involved in Moms Demand Action when she began teaching middle school math in Arizona prior to completing her Ph.D.
When she’s not working or volunteering, Quander enjoys traveling with her husband and spending time with her family, including her sister who is also a professor.
“We do a lot of family time,” Quander said. She and her sister are big reality tv fans. “It’s our love language. It’s so mindless.”
