Just like many full-time UHD employees, Ashley Carter began her career at the University as a student employee while working to complete her bachelor’s.

Born and raised in Oxford, Mississippi, Ashley moved to Houston when she was 18 to attend college. After graduating, she was hired as ESO’s Records Specialist.

Within a short time, Ashley became the division’s Talent Management and Development Specialist and recently moved into the role of Employee Relations and Talent Management Coordinator. Her current job entails working with staff to find solutions and ensure a healthy work environment while making sure everyone is their best self at their chosen job.

“My passion is helping people and with this current role, I’m able to find solutions for people and help them in a different way than I was able to before.”

Ashley is enrolled in Cornell University’s Employee Relations and Investigations Certificate Program. She is also working to complete her Master of Education in counseling from Texas Southern University. After she graduates with her master’s, she plans to open her own counseling practice for adolescents.

When she is not working, Ashley loves to travel and paint as well as fish. She also enjoys going to brunch and trying new foods.

Ashley also considers herself a daredevil. “I’m afraid of heights but will do it just for the thrill of it.”

One thing that most people don’t know about Ashley is that she was a powerlifter from the time she was in seventh grade until her sophomore year in college. She still holds records for deadlifting in Mississippi.

Even though she grew up in Mississippi, Houston and UHD have become a big part of Ashley’s life. She especially likes how UHD has similar demographics to the Houston area.

“Houston is a vibrant, diverse city, and I appreciate how UHD matches that. Although I was not born here, Houston and UHD are home.”
